Question 2:
There are 3 main characters in the movie and they are scar, ice, and rattler. The audience is able to relate to rattler because he is going to get something done that is normal for someone to do. also they can sympathise with him because they know in advance that he is going to be killed and will most likely feel bad for him.
the 2 characters that are meant to give off a scary vibe are ice and scar they are the 2 characters that are conspiring against rattler to kill him. ice is the big boss and is the one who sets the order to kill rattler. these guys give off a scary vibe because they are gangsters also because ice has a gun which can give a sense of fear and show he is dangerous.
The story line has more of a flow effect just going thru the story timeline chronologically rather than jumping around all over the place. also much of the story is revealed early on rather than leaving people with a cliffhanger and making them wonder what will happen.
in the story i used scary ominous music to create suspense and add that scary and dangerous feel.
Also i used phone call sounds to make the phone call more realistic. i also used a flow on effect which is contrasting to the usual effects in a thriller.
Thriller is a very popular genre throughout the film industry mainly to young adults aged 18-25. people around this age are drawn to the realness and graphic images / story line as well the intensity in the story line . Watching the twisted and psychologically disturbing plot unravel in front of the viewer’s eyes is something that attracts them so much.
However, the different sub genres of the thriller genre appeal to different ages and audiences. For example, action thrillers appeal to a more male dominated audience aged around 15-30 as they’re drawn in the by the action and fast paced edits/camera angles, whereas a more female dominated audience would be attracted to romantic thrillers such as Wicker Park. This is because they can relate the characters and story lines within the film. For example, psychological/crime thrillers such as Silence of the Lambs, Dream House, American Psycho and Fatal Attraction attract a mainly male dominated audience of the typical young adult age. This is because they’re drawn in by the conventional male leads, and can relate certain characters to people they know or even themselves, connecting and engaging the audience with the film/characters (both protagonists and antagonists). This male age range is also drawn into the action aspect of the crime thrillers. However, films that are supernatural thrillers (e.g. The Rite and The Others) appeal to more teenage – young adult female audiences, who are attracted by the ‘scare factor’ and possibly they will get scared or slightly affected by the film.
The audience also expects to be engaged with the characters and the story line. The characters as they’re usually developed and have their own stories which are revealed to the audience, and the story lines because they involve the audience as they have to figure out the story line along with the characters and unravel it themselves, which makes them want to watch more. In our own film opening sequence, we will do this by having our main character walking down the street with someone following her the whole way in the background without her knowing. Then, at the end she’s about to enter her house, he captures her, then that will be the end of the opening sequence. This will appeal and engage the audience as they will not know what will happen to her, unless they watched the whole film.
Mystery and thrillers all deal with suspense, the difference normally being in the pace and action components, and the reader’s privilege of knowing or not knowing the antagonist before the hero does. Psychological thrillers can be slightly different from other sub-genres such as action, spy or other thrillers.
Question 3:
- in this assessment i found some processes more challenging than others and others more simple than others.
- some of the things i found challenging in the process was, it was my first time a lot of these programs so i found it quite hard to use after effects as it was quite extensive and challenging for me to use because of the fact it was my first time.
-something i also found challenging was the planning and keeping to time while we were filming as this was my first time so i didn't exactly know how long we should spend on each thing.
-also we forgot to do voice overs for 2 parts of the scene so i had to go re-shoot which was a pain because i had to do extra editing that should have been un necissary.
-on the other hand i did enjoy the filming aspect with everyone and trying to get the right angles etc...
-i also enjoyed editing and making the final product because i got to learn how to use premier pro and also i got to put my own twist on what we had already filmed as a group.

Question 1
ReplyDeleteBlog Tool - 2/5 / Content - 5/10
- It seems like you potential don't 100% understand what a convention is. The 4 technical areas are the umbrella of label / category that conventions and technical aspects of a film will fall under. Within each technical area, we have conventions which are the 'ingredients' if you like or the aspects of the film that make it a certain genre. You list off some of the technical things you did which is great, and you mostly mention that it gives it a 'scary' feel. This is a very surface understanding and we can work on this. You're not wrong, your answer just needs detail and analysis. The second part of the question is asking whether these conventions you listed challenge or conform to usual thriller conventions. This aspect is missing.

- you have some valid observations here about how an audience may be engaged in your film but again, this needs to show a deeper level of analysis and making connections between ideas.
- your commentary on thrillers in general needs to not just be cut and pasted but find a few points and LINK them back to what you think about them, did you use those conventions? What are your thoughts? We need to make sure we cite any directly used work. Research is great! It just needs to be referenced or put in quotation marks when used like this.

- some relevant points and reflections on the learning process
- many areas you could have discussed such as demonstrating that you understand the different phases of production (pre-production/ production and post-production - outlined in the brief). What did you learn in pre-production - what was your 'role', what did you learn to do? How did you find group work? What challenges did you face?
- overall, what would you do differently next time?
- Detail needed for higher marks, photos, visuals and descriptions needed, commentary on all 3 phases of production and also critical reflection on what you would do differently next time. (this could relate to sound/ lighting/ setting and location choice / props/ credits and titles/ your after effect you chose etc)
Question 4 - 3/15
Blog Tool (0/5) / Content 3/10
- This answer is not presented to a high enough standard. You have included a few links but they are not even embedded and have no title or description. This was one of the easiest questions. What hardware, software and technologies did you learn? Where are the screen shots and photos? What camera gear/ sound gear/ lighting gear did you learn to use? Where is your description of the learning process in learning how to use all of the above?
