At the
start of this clip it begins with an establishing shot, which shows where they
are and kind of what is happening. This starts to give us an Image of the
status and financial level of the people show. Also at the start the opening
establishing shot looks onto the city, showing middle-eastern structured
buildings giving us a hint that the episode is filmed in the middle-east. Also
when it switches to the people they look middle-eastern as well. Another thing that
points to this further is that the people that you can hear murmering sounds
foreign or not English, this with the fact there is music commonly associated
with the middle-east further confirms our suspicions. Also another thing
pointing to the fact that these people are most likely not financially stable
is the fact that the people are wearing mostly old ragged clothes. The quick
cuts from view to view gives us a quick look at some different angles of the
lives they are living. As the lady starts to talk it does not immediatly go on
her face as she talks, this gives a sense of uncertainty, and of not knowing what is going to happen because we
cannot see her face, making us skeptical of the fact if she is good or not. We then
see a P.O.V shot of her driving a car in a very frantic and almost rushing way,
and the fact she is demanding to be able to find someone this paired with the
other evidence given so far we could get an idea that she is bad and trying to
find someone to hurt or kill them, also though we do not know her motives or
what has just recently happened and in that case she may actually be trying to
find someone to help them or because she is worried. Both ideas are completely
plausible and could have traction. She is then asked to be put on hold quickly
and at this point we start to realize that she is most likely worried because
of the way her face is as we are shown a close up, her face looks as though it
is worried that something has gone wrong or someone has gone missing. As she is
left on hold we start to hear the non-diagetic sound of the car engine which
reminds us that she is in a rush and this reiterates the fact that something
has probably gone wrong and she is trying to work out what. Also while we start
to think she is in a rush we also see in the back everything is passing by very
fast just showing us more. Also the way she has a car, looks like she is
wearing nice clothes and is using a mobile phone shows us she is probably a
higher classed person in this country showing the contrast between these 2
sectors of society that have been displayed in the early parts of this short
clip. After she is put on hold we see her looking worried and then it cuts off
to a prison setting where 2 guards are shown from a wide angle tying nooses
ready to execute somebody. This makes us think the person the lady is talking
about on the phone is most possibly related to this prison in some way and he
may possibly being executed. This is then made more probable as a man is seen looking out a
window from an over the shoulder view watching the guards tie the ropes making
us almost certain the person the lady on the phone was talking about, was this
guy looking out the window. Also this prison looks very old and run down, this
brings back the thoughts about the sectors of society and their roles. We then
see a guard checking the boards making sure they flip down properly, as he does
this the man looks down to the side looking worried and like he has no hope of
getting out of this. As he looks down you hear a ladies voice In the background
telling us about how he has been held a year and now he is going to have a
death sentence, this is where we realize that the girl on the phone is the same
girl as about 10 seconds ago and cuts back to a close up of her face again and
then a wide shot of the street as she drives thru. In this scene we start to
think that this man probably is innocent and that he has either been wrongfully
accused or something like that. As well, we hear the lady acting surprised and
shocked about what is about to happen, this again shows us the 2 different sides
of these sectors of society and how their laws are probably quite different to
the country the lady is either coming from or is from. We then are revealed
another person on the other side of the phone who is at some sort of meeting in
another country that is also quite posh and fancy which is again contrasting
the 2 sectors of society. We then see the man arguing back to the girl and
making a good point that de-rails the ladies argument. As this occurs she is
stopped in traffic showing us the fact she is both being stopped in the
argument and being stopped in traffic which is probably on purpose. As the
woman walks out the car we see that she is constantly watching her back because
she is a woman in a middle-eastern country where woman are lower status then
men, this is also shown through the relationship between her and the man on the
phone with him having more power and say, also winning the argument which could
be seen as something similar between the 2 different sectors of society. As the
woman walks to another man to try and get inside, she tells the man that she
thought the other man would not have probably bought it and brings out a bag of
money and gets the man to give it to the guard to get her into the prison, this
shows the woman and desperate and this shows the contrast between certain
sectors of society again as the woman is willing and easily able to give a sum
of money so that the guard would let her in, whereas the guard is easily bribed
with money showing his financial situation is probably not that great and him
doing anything even something against the law to let someone get into the
prison. When she gets into the prison she starts to talk to the man and finds
out that his family is in hiding and she says she will personally help his
family, but in turn for information, at this opportunity the man jumps at it
just to help his family, whereas the lady is just looking out for herself, this
is another contrast of the sectors of society.
In this
essay there are a lot of contrasts in the different social sectors of society
and this build over time and makes the story more intense.
